Is oregano oil capable of killing bacteria?

You must have heard a lot about antibiotics in your life and especially more during the last 6 months since the spread of Coronavirus has started in the country. Antibiotics are either made in the laboratory chemically or are found in the natural way in nature and they kill the harmful bacteria present in the human body. Oregano is something that you must have heard a lot in your life especially as a seasoning for Pizzas and Pastas but I am sure many of you must be unaware that Oregano Oil is one of the best antibacterial essential oils and has strong antibacterial properties.

Oregano oil contains carvacrol and thymol which are antibacterial and antifungal compounds. The carvacrol compound present in the oil was found to reduce the infection as effectively as traditional allopathic antibiotics. Also, it is worth a note that oregano oil has more than one antibacterial component which makes it really effective against bacteria like staph which makes the oil equivalent to doses of vancomycin drugs. Another dangerous bacteria called staphylococcus which is the reason for many diseases in the human body and is becoming resistant to new antibiotics everyday was tested against oregano oil. The results were pretty amazing because as compared to other mainstream antibiotics, oregano oil was able to inhibit the growth of staphylococcus significantly which is amazing.

The recent study which has been done to check the effectiveness of the oregano oil against bacteria shows that the oil works by disrupting the cell membrane of the bacteria thus reducing its negative impact on the body considerably. When the cell of the bacteria comes in contact with the compound called carvacrol, the cell membrane gets significantly altered. Once the cell of the membrane is damaged, the influx of the various compounds present in our body like calcium can easily kill the bacteria. In the study, all gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria were tested against the oregano oil and it proved to be effective against both bacteria.
