Guide to select plywood

India is a good market for plywood investments, but still, the plywood market in India is very jumbled and scattered. The Indian market comprises of different types of plywood. Identify the application

·        If you want to purchase plywood for furniture in dry areas like a bedroom, living room or study room, then you must choose commercial or MR grade plywood.

·        If you are considering to buy plywood for furniture in the kitchen or bathroom, then it would be an apt choice for you to consider BWR Grade or waterproof grade.  

·        But before purchasing, make a list of your plywood requirement as per your usage and need, then purchase accordingly.

Check for ISI certification

·        Best quality plywood is always ISI certified. The Commercial, MR or BWR Grade Plywood are IS:303, one the other hand, Marine and Waterproof Plywood is IS:710.

·        Before purchasing the plywood, always check the CML number underneath the ISI mark. Every plywood manufacturer has a unique CML number which helps the buyers to identify the plywood manufacturer. 

Check for Gurjan Face and Full Core full panel mark

·        Gurjan is one of the best face veneers used for the plywood. Your plywood should have the Gurjan Face veneer on the top of it. 

·        Plywood which is full core full panel will not be susceptible to splitting when a nail is stricken.

Get a small cut piece sample from a lot

·        Ask your plywood suppliers in Ahmedabad to cut a small sample piece from the entire sheet and give. 

·        But never rely on trade samples as they are always good. So, always ask for a sample from an actual lot of plywood. Ask them to cut the sample piece diagonally.

·        Check whether the sample has too many core gaps in between or not. Some amount of pinhole gaps (2mm – 3mm) are allowed, but if there are too many gaps, then this could be a warning sign.

Nail holding capacity

·        The strength of a plywood panel depends on its capacity to hold a nail while used in different furniture. 

·        Before purchasing a ply, told your dealer to hammer in a nail (14” x 1.5”) into the side profile of a plywood sheet. If the layers fragmented on nailing, the bonding isn’t enough strong and sturdy. This means it can’t be used in furniture.

Check Plywood Sheet Physically

·        Check whether the plywood face is proper or not. If the plywood possesses recon face then laminate will not get comfortably glued. You can keep your nail on the face and try to remove it manually. If the upper face breaks easily then plywood is not suitable for the application.

·        Don’t forget to check whether the surface of plywood is smooth or not. If some waviness is there, then it is not ideal to use that plywood.  

·        Check all the four corners of the plywood. Make sure that there is no variation in thickness. Check thoroughly the entire lot of plywood laying at the warehouse. Don’t forget to check whether the sheets are having a uniform thickness or not. 

·        Check all the sides of the plywood and make sure that core layers quietly visible as straight lines without core gaps.

·        Check Weight of plywood by lifting from one side. You should aware of that heavyweight plywood has always more density.
